What the calculator leaves out
This compares energy costs and the difference in purchase price only. EVs usually need less maintenance (no oil changes, less brake wear), which widens their advantage. Public DC fast charging often costs two to three times home electricity, which narrows it. Tax credits and resale values vary.

Usually. At 18¢/kWh an efficient EV using 28 kWh per 100 miles costs about $5.04 per 100 miles, versus $10.33 for a 30-MPG car at $3.10/gal.
How long does it take an EV to pay for itself?
Divide the price difference by the yearly fuel savings. A $5,000 premium and $750 a year in savings pays back in under 7 years.
What if I only use fast chargers?
At around 45¢/kWh, charging costs rise about 2.5×: an EV using 28 kWh per 100 miles then costs about $12.60 per 100 miles, more than a 30-MPG gas car at $3.10/gal ($10.33).
